Poker is a card game that involves betting between players and requires luck as well as skill. Over time, skill can virtually eliminate the effect of chance. This is true whether the game is played in a casino, at home or online.

The game is usually played with a standard pack of 52 cards and may include jokers or other wild cards. The ranks of standard poker hands are (from highest to lowest): Ace, King, Queen, Jack, Ten, Eight, Seven, Six, Five and Four. The suits do not rank higher than each other and ties are broken by the highest unmatched cards or secondary pairs (in a full house, for example).

When playing poker, players place bets voluntarily into the pot. This money is only placed into the pot if a player believes that his or her bet has positive expected value, which is determined by a combination of probability, psychology and game theory.

Generally speaking, the more you bet, the more likely you are to win. However, there are a number of situations in which it is better to be selective with your bets. Ryan Fee explains how to know when to call, raise or fold.
